Aardwolf cubs are raised in dens, often old aardvark, porcupine, or springhare burrows.

Most aardwolf dens are oval-shaped, about 32 centimeters high and 42 centimeters wide at the single entrance and rapidly narrowing to about 20 by 30 centimeters inside the tunnel. Dens are sought for refuge during the day and are regularly slept in for 6-8 weeks at a time before another den is used, though a den may be re-occupied 6-18 months later.
