The traditional consumption of the axolotl by local people, is threatening the survival of the species. Occasionally taken as a food item, (substituted for fish,) axolotls are prepared by either roasting or boiling, and the tail is eaten with vinegar or cayenne pepper.

Axolotls have been long recorded as edible especially about Mexico City and patcuaro and remain today a dietary delicacy or staple in these areas.
