The mule deer is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule and allow the deer’s sense of hearing to be extremely acute.

Because of its large ears, the mule deer’s sense of hearing is extremely acute. Because of their acute hearing and excellent binocular vision, mule deer specialize in detecting danger at a very long range.
