African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)
Throughout the month of June 2019, FaunaFocus will feature the beautifully patterned African wild dog!
The African wild dog is Africa’s second most endangered carnivore. Its name derives from its painterly, colorful pelt markings that are unique to each dog. As a social species, these dogs live in packs up to 40, led by an alpha male and female. Group hunts are led in daylight and prey is quickly eaten alive. This species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
