The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus,) is the only penguin species found in Africa. These social, aquatic birds live in large colonies along the shores of Southern Africa and take part in communal behaviors, such as the cooperative raising of young, monogamous breeding habits, and symbiotic preening routines. With a pelage of black and white feathers that allow these penguins to camouflage themselves from both, aquatic and aerial predators, these avians are often mistaken for their similar penguin relatives. Listed as an endangered species by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, these fowl are not as well-known as some other penguin species.
